Athens, Georgia's Casper & the Cookies has been creating a peculiar brand of power pop, tirelessly testing new waters in their songwriting and sonic pallet. Emerging from a broad range of musical influences and training, the Cookies meld their unique talents into a musical alloy that is continuously evolving. Casper & the Cookies first two full length albums The Optimist's Club (2006) and Oh! (2004) were released in the U.S. and Japan to high acclaim and resulted in a series of tours across the U.S. as well as in Canada and Japan.
It's a matter of science meeting the absurd with a little OCD thrown in. This is how primary songwriters Jason NeSmith and Kay Stanton work together. While not always a seamless process, the Cookies are compulsively hard workers both in the studio and on the road. It’s no wonder considering that NeSmith was once a member of fellow Athens band Of Montreal.
As much as they love writing and recording, it’s onstage where the Cookies really shine — literally and figuratively. Showmen to the core, each band member loves the performance and sculpts it each one into an artform (see live reviews on next page). Regarding the live Casper & the Cookies experience, Cookie Jason expounds: “Every night we try to find a new way to interact with the crowd. Sometimes one of us gets bruised.”
2006 and 2007 saw the Cookies playing shows across the US and Canada in support of the new album and sharing stages with The Apples in Stereo, Antibalas, Black Kids, The Blow, Architecture in Helsinki, Voxtrot, Deerhoof, Elekibass, Hidden Cameras, The Hoodoo Gurus, Of Montreal, Pylon, and The Whigs. 2008 brought a Japan tour to support the Japanese release of The Optimist's Club on Waikiki Record.
