"Casper & the Cookies is the latest, and they're playing big, bright, and bouncy psychedelic power pop on their second album The Optimist's Club. The exuberence is contagious, especially live..."
- HARP

Jason NeSmith (ex-of Montreal) doesn’t know why his band is still called Casper & the Cookies and doesn’t care. He and Kay Stanton (also of Supercluster including members of Pylon and Olivia Tremor Control) used to make lists of alternate, less cutesy names, but they’ve been so busy kicking ass that the moniker has ceased to be of any concern.

In 2005, if all you knew about Athens, GA’s Casper & the Cookies was their name you might be forgiven for dismissing them. But like Beefheart said, “If you’ve got ears you’ve gotta listen.” 2006’s The Optimist’s Club showed major artistic growth in pleasently unexpected directions. Swinging handily from pure pop to more kraut-y textures, the record won an enthusiastic following from pop kids and music bloggers, strengthened through more than 150 sweaty shows all over North America and Japan.

With the addition of Jim Hix and Joe Rowe (ex-The Glands), C&C surprised everyone with energetic opening sets for the likes of the Apples in Stereo, Deerhoof, and Black Kids. Anyone still stuck with misguided twee pop notions was shocked when C&C revealed themselves as a flamboyant rock and roll band replete with fake eyelashes and loud guitars!

The Cookies have arrived. And to celebrate two years of heavy touring they sealed themselves into Bel*Air Studio-- NeSmith's recording facility--, where the liberties taken on The Optimist’s Club inspired them to push further than ever. As a result, Modern Silence, has an indomitable spirit. Asked if he’s concerned that this record might challenge listeners with its disregard for stylistic unity, NeSmith says, ”I’ve got a short attention span. I might want to hear a few Nick Lowe songs, and then I’ve got to listen to Steve Reich. Music has returned to a singles-centric era and bridged it with the mixtape mentality. We look at this record as a collection of singles with a theme. But without trying I think we’ve still managed to make a record that sounds of a whole.”
